The Spa Guide – Blog 04 – Lava Shells

Hey everyone I’m Stephanie the new Holistic Spa and Wellbeing Therapist here at ILLUMI I joined the team in March 2018 and brought to the salon the fantastic Lava Shells. I have a range of Lava Shell treatments on my menu as well as other Holistic treatments for you to experience but today and over the next month I am going to share my love for Lava and why this is a must have treatment. I shall begin my blog by introducing you to the shells and giving you some info on the workings and benefits.

Lava Shells are the worlds first self heating massage tool. These eco-friendly massage tools require no electricity to heat up. The Lava Shell sachets contain natural ingredients that are non-toxic and biodegradable and are not harmfull if touched. After treatment, used sachets can be placed in a food waste bin or on a compost heap and the packets are also recyclable. I feel these fit in perfectly here at ILLUMI and adhere to our beliefs about caring for the environment we live in.

How do they heat up I hear you ask? Well a sachet containing a blend of food-grade minerals is placed inside the shell and a simple salt water activator is added causing a natural chemical reaction which produces heat. This exothermic reaction will continue to generate heat for over an hour and can be made to be very warm!

About the Shells Composed of Calcium Carbonate, these are genuine Tiger Clam Shells from the Philippines. The clams are collected by local free-divers, and the shells removed so the clam can be prepared for food. The shells were previously discarded as waste. But now local islanders are employed to sort through them, looking for the right size, shape and symmetry. They are then sand polished so they are nice and smooth and bonded together. Because they are natural, they will come in different shapes, sizes and thicknesses. The Porcelain Shells are handcrafted using high quality porcelain and crushed shells. Each shell is hand painted, replicating the beautiful lustre and appearance of natural shells. They have been cast from the ideal ergonomic natural shell and are more uniform in size and thickness. The shells can withstand a great deal of pressure in massage.

Why choose Lava Shells over Hot Stones? Less shells are required for a massage in comparison to stones, for a full body treatment I would use a maximum of three shells all activated at different points throughout the massage so the client will feel perfect heat throughout. The benefit to this will mean I as a therapist will have more contact time with the client and a more effective massage treatment is provided. The shells provide a seamless massage between heat and touch. The shells are smooth and non-porous so they will not absorb bacteria, massage oils or dead skin cells like basalt stones. This makes them hygienic and easier to clean. I love the simplicity of the workings of the Lava Shells, an added bonus 😊!
